Saint Gayan Côtes-du-Rhône Villages blanc Sablet l'Oratory Rhône 2023
Fortunately, the Meffre family also makes a white Côtes-du-Rhône. These wines are far too rare considering how full of character and gastronomic they are. In the region, a large part of the wine is red and the small amount of white wine is consumed in Lyons' bistros and hardly ever ends up in export. The l'Oratory comes from the Sablet appellation, which is very suitable for white wines and is a cuvée of some local grape varieties, led by the wonderful Viognier. In addition, Bourboulenc, Grenache blanc, Clairette and Roussanne, many of which are old vines. The wine is full-bodied, creamy, fruity, and beautifully spicy. Apricot, pear, pineapple, some cashew and fennel seeds. Mild acidity. What a wine value! Goes very well with buttery sauces, poultry and hearty salads like Caesar's Salad.
The Domaine Saint-Gayan of the Meffre family from Gigondas has been making wine for quite some time now - since 1703 to be precise. Today's owners Jean-Pierre and Martine Meffre make wonderfully unagitated, but exemplarily powerful, harmonious and spicy wines on the southern Rhône. Their largest vineyard holdings are located in the famous sites around the small town of Gigondas, in addition to plots in the neighbouring villages of Sablet, Rasteau, Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe and the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation. It is striking that the Meffres can build on a respectable stock of very old vines. The Grenache vines, in particular, are sometimes over a hundred years old. The yield is thus reduced in a natural way, the wines gain in concentration and depth. Common to all their wines is that they all have had enough time to develop. They mature in concrete and large wooden barrels, are bottled unfiltered and are only put on sale after a generous bottle ageing. In this way, the Meffres ensure that the wines are always ready to drink and, in the best case, achieve a high degree of harmony in taste.
