Holger Koch

We have been selling Holger Koch's wines with great enthusiasm for many years. The winery is situated in Bickensohl, Kaiserstuhl, in the region of Baden. Many good winegrowers are situated there but only very few who can produce wines with this refinement, freshness and elegance. Also, Koch's wines have an incredible balance and, above all, a long shelf life. They not only make very good Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder, but also really great Chardonnays and, above all, a whole range of very Burgundian Pinot Noirs. The Koch's based their work in the vineyard on biodynamic principles. And in the cellar, Holger is undogmatic and eager to experiment, thus he manages to produce absolutely convincing quality wines year after year. Holger Koch and his wife Gabriele Engesser stand for a very clear, cool, and elegant style of wine. Their wines never have too much fruit, are never too fat, but always very balanced. The Kochs have a good 8 hectares of prime locations in the Kaiserstuhl, are proven Burgundy specialists and concept winemakers in the best sense of the word. For Holger, every detail counts. You can spend hours with him discussing local yeasts, biodynamic principles, and the right amount of added sulfur. Also, he can think outside the box, but at the same time respect the conditions at the Kaiserstuhl. The Kochs take good care of the condition of their vineyards. To keep them healthy, Holger and his father Hubert invest a lot of extra hours in maintaining them. Natural cultivation, and picking the grapes by hand are a matter of honour here. Wonderful Pinot, Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder grow on the terraced vineyards around Bickensohl. They also cultivate more and more Chardonnay vines, which, according to Holger, have a great future there.
