There are few red wines in Italy that are more prestigious than Brunello di Montalcino from Tuscany. You may know this from the favourite Italian restaurant around the corner. There, this special wine is uncorked with great ceremony, surrounded by awe and grandeur. Life on the eleven hectares of vineyards of the Fattoi is less glamourous. Their vineyard is located south of the small village of Montalcino, right at the top of a hill, where a strong wind blows. Brunello di Montalcino is still working here: three generations together on one farm and only Sangiovese in the vineyard. Just as things should be for wine from Montalcino. When grandfather Ofelio bought the land in 1965, he didn't even think about wine. Because back in the day, viticulture did not play a major economic role here. Cereals, olives, a few animals - mixed farming, that was it. They lived off their own land. It was only gradually that the family recognised the potential of their land and over the years planted several vineyards on the slopes below the estate. The soils consist mainly of Galestro, a slate-clay mixture, and tuff, a soft volcanic rock. These soils give the wine freshness and liveliness, because who wants to drink jam? In the meantime, the sons Leonardo and Lamberto run the winery together with granddaughter Lucia. You can still meet Ofelio in the vineyard or in the cellar, where he supervises the work of his family. So that it will continue for future generations of Fattois in Montalcino. No weedkiller in the vineyard, no technical gadgets in the cellar, no frills. The family's olive oil also deserves a special mention. The Fattois cultivate about 700 old olive trees of the varieties Moraiolo, Leccino, Frantoio and Ogliarola and produce a fantastic oil, which is also on our shelves.
