Kueh Muih: Sweet Treats from Southeast Asia
Step into a world of sweet creations
with Zi-Ting Law

In Southeast Asia, kueh refers to a wide variety of sweet and savoury snacks and treats, a tradition as vast and intricate as French patisserie or Japanese wagashi, with its own distinct palette of colours, layers, and forms.

This introductory class will open your eyes and palate to a few of the most beloved sweet kuehs in the region: from crowd-pleasers like onde-onde and sago gula melaka, to the striking pastel green and white layers of kueh talam.

Menu (example):

  •  Onde-onde (sweet potato glutinous rice balls filled with coconut sugar, coated in grated coconut)
  •  Kueh talam (“tray baked kueh” of salted coconut and pandan custard layers)
  •  Sago gula melaka (tapioca pearls, served with coconut milk and coconut sugar syrup)

Zi-Ting Law

Zi-Ting grew up watching her family’s matriarchs prepare meals for her and her family. She sat in a corner of the outdoor kitchen, listening to the oil sizzle as baskets of vegetables were emptied into waiting woks and watching deft, practiced hands drizzle sauces into bubbling dishes. These sights, smells, and sounds have enchanted her into adulthood.

Today, Zi-Ting spends her time cooking, eating, and writing about food. Since she moved from Singapore to Berlin in 2022, many of her kitchen adventures have been centred around recreating food from home, from her grandaunt’s signature salted fish and pork patties, to kuehs and the likes of nasi ulam, nasi lemak, and beef rendang.

She has published an essay about onde-onde, a traditional dessert found in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, and continues to cook and write from her home in Berlin. Her work can be found at @eatyourbittergourd on Instagram and eatyourbittergourd.substack.com.
