A Syrah of this class didn't seem possible in Germany until a few years ago. In the meantime, however, the warmth and dryness that Syrah needs, gradually increase in the North Palatinate and Knipsers have gained a lot of experience with this grape variety through the years. They started cultivating the grape in their vineyard in 1993, first in trial cultivation, and later on, when the wines got better and better, they went for sale. Stylistically reminiscent of a Syrah of the northern Rhone, but then definitely from a good year, Knipser Syrah has aged for at least 18 months in new and used barriques. Powerful, dense, and nicely herbal, the wine has still enough freshness and clarity to stay in balance. Dark berries, black cherries, white pepper and some smoked meat on the nose. Then cassis, cocoa, pepper, and some clove. Very long and hard to impress.

The Knipsers from Laumersheim in Northern Palatinate operate one of the most renowned German wineries. Some of their great wines are icons of German viticulture, but also their base wines are of a quality that's rarely found. Their wines are always ready to drink when they go on sale, which is really nice. The reason for this is that the wines have been given as much time in the cellar as they needed. This way, even a 'Gutswein' can have matured for a few years until it's harmonious enough to leave the winery. The core quality of the Knipsers, however, is that they master every discipline: from fresh white wine to 'Große Gewächse' (grand crus) to fine sweet wines, from rosé to Spätburgunder to Syrah – the Knipsers do them all, and do them all well!
