2018 Stagård Handwerk Grüner Veltliner Kremstal
The Grüner Veltliner Handwerk from Lesehof Stagard is a wine of character. Coming from calcareous, south-facing locations, it is mineral-spicy, dense, and slightly creamy. It's fermented spontaneously and remains on the mash for at least 24 hours. Lots of stone fruit, peach, apricot, some hay, and white flowers. Juicy with a firm texture. A very gastronomic wine.
Dominique and Urban Stagard have been managing the Kremstaler Lesehof Stagard since 2008, but the farm itself dates back to the year 1424, and has been in the family since 1786. So there's a lot of tradition and history involved, which you can find in the ancient and extremely rustic stone-carved cellar, in which Urban lets his great white wines ferment and mature. The Lesehof is located in Stein, a district of the beautiful Krems an der Donau. 15 hectares of prime locations on the primary rock are cultivated, among them also a few parcels in the neighbouring Wachau. From the beginning the aim was to specialise in organic vineyard work, giving the wines a lot of time and intervening as little as possible in the cellar. The Stagards have come a long way and are now considered ambassadors for the terroir of the large Steiner vineyards in Austria. Their reputation is based primarily on their Riesling wines with their strong character, but the Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, and even their Gemischter Satz has their very own signature.
