2018 Seehof Riesling Westhofen "vom Kalkstein" Rheinhessen
Seehof Riesling Westhofener Kalkstein is a blend of the best Riesling vineyards of the Seehof winery. It's a typical village wine that does not aim at the individual location expression but is intended to map the taste profile of the entire wine town of Westhofen at a high level. And in this case, it works extremely well. Subtle Riesling fruit, a lot of spicy, almost dusty minerality, a full-body, smooth texture, and good length. Apricot, yellow peach, mint, lemon balm, wet pebble, and some smoke. A very good Riesling with a clear origin profile from the limestone.
The Seehof winery in the famous Rhine-Hessian wine town of Westhofen is run by the Fauth family in the fifth generation. Fauth's son Florian is responsible for the winemaking and the style of the wines and father Ernst takes care of the care of the vineyards. Over a thousand years old, the Seehof itself is a small piece of cultural history. Fauth relies on fully ripe grapes, a strict selection, a lot of manual work, and a clear elaboration of the profile of the Westhofen locations such as Morstein and Kirchspiel. Of course, it's all about the terroir hero Riesling, but the Fauths also score highly with grape varieties like Scheurebe or Auxerrois, and with wines like the incredible Pinot Noir Rosé, which sells out quickly for this reason. We've been working with Florian's wines for a long time and can say with great certainty: They have always been good ambassadors for their Westhofen terroir, but are still getting better and better and are now clearly at the top of the region.
