2018 Knipser Laumersheimer Steinbuckel Riesling GG trocken Pfalz
The Riesling Großes Gewächs trocken from Laumersheimer Steinbuckel by Knipser is perhaps the most characteristic GG of the Knipsers winery. To get to know the wine properly, you need time and large glasses. Anyone who brings both will advance to the secret of the wine. The Steinbuckel wines are initially as hard and aromatically reserved as the name of the very calcareous location suggests. But with a little patience, a huge Riesling spectacle unfolds. Herbs, beautiful meadow herbs. Then citrus, orange peel, some ginger. Wonderful juiciness in combination with a lot of minerality on the palate. Mirabelle, ripe apple, peach, salted lemon. All this with well-integrated acidity and moderate alcohol level. This wine has a lot of potential and will mature well for a few years.
The Knipsers from Laumersheim in Northern Palatinate operate one of the most renowned German wineries. Some of their great wines are icons of German viticulture, but also their base wines are of a quality that's rarely found. Their wines are always ready to drink when they go on sale, which is really nice. The reason for this is that the wines have been given as much time in the cellar as they needed. This way, even a 'Gutswein' can have matured for a few years until it's harmonious enough to leave the winery. The core quality of the Knipsers, however, is that they master every discipline: from fresh white wine to 'Große Gewächse' (grand crus) to fine sweet wines, from rosé to Spätburgunder to Syrah – the Knipsers do them all, and do them all well!
