2018 Claus Preisinger Kalkstein Blaufränkisch Burgenland
The Blaufränkisch Kalkstein from Claus Preisinger tastes firm, clear, and slightly mineral. There are some blueberry and black pepper on the nose and a lot of spice and minerality on the palate. And a nice basket of dark berries tops off this really great wine. Fermented spontaneously, and matured in large wooden barrels for six months, it makes, slightly chilled, a great companion to mushroom dishes or game.
Claus Preisinger's wines from Gols in Burgenland have been with us for a long time and inspire us year after year. Within a few years, Claus has developed a very independent style among Austrian winegrowers. Near the shores of Lake Neusiedl, he relies on biodynamic work methods with a lot of manual labour in the vineyard and well-considered relaxation in the cellar. He dispenses with cultivated yeasts, enzymes, and additives, and his wines are not filtered and hardly any of them are sulfurized. This also made his wines more clear, puristic, and exciting over the years. Claus now mainly relies on regional grape varieties, such as Zweigelt, St. Laurent, Blaufränkisch, or Grüner Veltliner.
