2017 Ziereisen Talrain Blauer Spätburgunder Baden
Although coming from the highest location of Hanspeter Ziereisen's vineyards, the Blue Spätburgunder Talrain is a wine with expressive fruit and ripe acidity. The grapes come from a Jurassic limestone layer with an iron-containing clay layer. This makes the wine distinctly mineral and spicy and somewhat powerful. As always spontaneously fermented, matured in used barriques and bottled unfiltered. Special about this wine, is the conscious use of whole grape fermentation, which means that at least some of the grape's skins, seeds and stems are fermented with the must. As a result, the wine gets noticeably more tannins and has an unique aroma. This procedure is quite common in Burgundy, among others, and works very well for Burgundy lover Ziereisen. Cherry confit, some cassis, sloe, pepper, cocoa. The tannin gives the wine more complexity and length, but is very well integrated. It goes well with caponata and seared meats.
Hanspeter Ziereisen, his wife Edeltraud and their family make incredibly characteristic and distinctive wines. Their love for Burgundian Pinot Noirs and their ambition to make the best possible wine from the old grape variety Gutedel, a grape which is typical of Baden and the Markgräferland region, already gives an idea of the taste of her wines. But they are even more complex, and in addition to great Pinot Noirs they also make one of the best German Syrah. Even their Pinot Gris tastes exciting! Ziereisen also demonstrate their independence by marketing all their wines as country wines from Baden. This brought them a lot of recognition from both critics and wine fans. The Ziereisen winery is now one of the most appreciated and highly decorated in Germany.
