2014 Quinta do Noval Late Bottled Vintage Unfiltered Douro
There is a reason why Noval is famous for the unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage (LBV). The grapes for their LBV are still traditionally crushed in so-called lagares, open granite containers. After five years of ageing in large oak and chestnut wood barrels, the LBV bottled unfiltered and, unlike vintage ports, does not need to mature in the bottle for an inordinate amount of time, to reach its peak. Ripe berry fruit, cocoa, but also spice and some tannin. Multi-layered and complex. Very nice with chocolate tart or as a digestive.
Quinta do Noval is one of the most renowned port wine makers and has a long history. The first mention of Noval wines dates back to 1715! In the middle of the Douro Valley with its magnificent terraced steep slopes, Quinta do Noval produces outstanding port wine of all quality levels. Not only are the grapes harvested in the Douro Valley, but also the wines are processed and stored there - which is rarely done as usually the grapes are transported to the warehouses in Vila Nova de Gaia near the Atlantic estuary. A special treat for special days!
