The grapes of the Langhe Nebbiolo of Castello di Perno grow in the cru area of Gramolere. It's here, where some big Barolos come from. But the Langhe Nebbiolo also reveals its noble origin. After being manually harvested and spontaneously fermented, Langhe Nebbiolo spends six to eight months in 50hl Austrian oak barrels. The result is clear raspberry fruit, a beautiful balance and a present tannin framework, which never overwhelms the fruit. A really nice wine which we highly recommend.

The Castello di Perno towers high above the village of the same name in the heart of the Piedmontese vineyards. The origins of this complex date back to the Middle Ages. But the Castello is not just old walls, it is a piece of Italian cultural history. Until the 1990s it was the headquarters of the Giulio Einaudi publishing house - a place of exchange for important Italian writers such as Primo Levi and Italo Calvino. Here, they could work, find peace and inspiration. The works that are created nowadays at Castello di Perno are fluid in nature, but we find them just as exciting. After years of decline, Gregorio Gitti, a Milanese professor of law and wine lover, bought the castle along with some vineyards. The first wine was produced in 2014. In the meantime, 12 hectares are organically cultivated and spread over some of the best terroirs of Piedmont. The aim is to produce classic wines characterised by balance and lightness - not necessarily typical of Piedmont. To achieve this, Signore Gitti has engaged the oenologist Gian Luca Colombo, who works in the cellar with traditional methods such as spontaneous fermentation, ageing in large wooden barrels and long maceration periods. Only as little sulphurisation as necessary is applied, to allow the wines to mature well.
