Berbere is the very hot spice mix used in Ethiopian cooking. It has a coarse earthy texture with a pungent flavour - given some fragrance by thyme, cumin and allspice - that is extremely hot. Traditionally, you would use long pepper for the peppery spice notes, but (as organic long pepper has intermittent supply) Steenbergs organic Ethiopian Berbere uses black pepper. Use our organic Ethiopian berbere either as a dry paste or mix with a little water to make into a curry paste.
